4. Personal data

Personal data is information that can be used to identify a person, i.e. information that can be traced back to a person. This typically includes the name, e-mail address or telephone number. However, purely technical data that can be assigned to a person is also considered personal data.

5. Overview of the individual procedures

Personal data is processed on this website as part of the following procedures:

5.1 Automatic collection of access data/server log files

Each time the website is accessed, we automatically collect a range of technical data that constitutes personal data. These can be:

  • IP address of the user
  • Name of the website or file accessed
  • Date and time of access
  • Amount of data transferred
  • Notification of successful retrieval
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system of the user
  • Referrer URL (the previously visited website)

This data is not merged with other personal data that you actively provide on the website. We collect server log files for the purpose of administering the website and detecting and preventing unauthorized access.

The server log files with the above-mentioned data are automatically deleted after 7 days. We reserve the right to store the server log files for longer if there are facts that suggest unauthorized access.

The legal basis for the above data processing is Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f) of the EU General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"). This legal authorization permits the processing of personal data within the scope of the "legitimate interest" of the controller, unless your fundamental rights, freedoms or interests prevail. The data processing described serves to ensure the functionality of our website, to optimize our website and to ensure the security of our information technology systems. This is our legitimate interest. You can object to this data processing at any time if there are reasons relating to your particular situation that speak against data processing. All you need to do is send an email to the data protection officer.

What is an IP address?

The IP address is the globally valid identifier, at the time of allocation, which is assigned to an end device (e.g. your computer, smartphone or tablet) either directly by an internet provider or via a WLAN router. In its currently most common form (IPv4), the IP address consists of four blocks of numbers separated by dots. As a private user, you will not usually use a constant IP address, as this will only be assigned to you temporarily by your provider (so-called "dynamic IP address"). In the case of a permanently assigned IP address (so-called "static IP address"), it is in principle possible to clearly assign the user data via this feature. Except for the purpose of tracking unauthorized access to our website, VDE does not use this data on a personal basis, but only evaluates on an anonymous basis which of our websites are favored, how many accesses are made daily and the like.

Our website already supports the new IPv6 addresses. If you already have an IPv6 address, you should also know the following: The IPv6 address consists of eight blocks of four. As with the entire IPv4 address, the first four blocks are typically assigned dynamically for private users. However, the last four blocks of an IPv6 address (so-called "interface identifiers") are determined by the end device that you use to browse the website. Unless otherwise set in your operating system, the so-called MAC address is used for this purpose. The MAC address is a type of serial number that is unique for every IP-enabled device worldwide. We therefore do not save the last four blocks of your IPv6 address. We generally recommend that you activate the so-called "Privacy Extensions" on your end device in order to better anonymize the last four blocks of your IPv6 address. Most common operating systems have a "Privacy Extensions" function, although in some cases this is not set by default.

5.2 Making contact

When you contact us (e.g. via contact form or e-mail), the information you provide will be processed for the purpose of processing the inquiry and in the event that follow-up questions arise. The data you provide will be processed exclusively for the purpose of contacting you.

The information provided when contacting us is processed on the basis of Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f) GDPR. This authorization allows the processing of personal data in the context of the "legitimate interest" of the controller, unless your fundamental rights, freedoms or interests prevail. Our legitimate interest lies in processing the contact. You can object to this data processing at any time if there are reasons relating to your particular situation that speak against data processing. All you need to do is send an email to the data protection officer. If the contact is aimed at the conclusion of a contract, the additional legal basis for the processing is Art. 6 para. 1 lit. b GDPR.

The personal data stored in the context of contacting us will be deleted when the matter associated with the contact has been fully clarified and it is not to be expected that the specific contact will be relevant again in the future.
